Wolfville Legion vice president Paul Murphy, president Donn Miles, and past president Michael Bawtree at the Oct. 5 launch of a capital campaign in support of an extensive renovation project. Troy Restaurant in Wolfville hosted the event. KIRK STARRATTWOLFVILLE, N.S. — Members of the Wolfville Legion believe they have an opportunity to serve as a potential model for branches everywhere through a change in approach and a major renovation project.
Wolfville Legion president Donn Miles said it’s important to remember the thousands across the country who have served and continue to serve — especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice — every day. He said that Legions have been losing members due to age. However, during recent difficult times, Wolfville has been able to increase its membership and receive greater civilian support.
Murphy said the scope of the planned renovations grew as work began and more structural issues were uncovered. It made sense to address as many problems with the building as they could at the same time through a more extensive project. He said volunteer efforts on the part of 22 Legion members saved them about $60,000 in demolition costs. Over the past nine or 10 months, they’ve held more than 30 work parties lasting between three and eight hours.
As a result, they established a new executive, sold some land the Legion had been holding on to, and started planning the renovation project. Wolfville Mayor Wendy Donovan, Kings-South MLA Keith Irving and Kings-Hants MP Kody Blois were unable to attend the launch, but all sent greetings.
