“About 2,500 people were left homeless — businesses destroyed, homes destroyed, people displaced from their homes and lost all their belongings. ... And from that, Windsor rose from the ashes,” said Richard Smith, a retired Windsor firefighter, reflecting on what is known as the Great Windsor Fire. “We hope that citizens will come out and recognize the efforts of the local and surrounding fire service,” said Smith.Windsor Fire Chief Jamie Juteau agreed. He said it’s important for people to realize the magnitude of the fire, and how it helped reshape Windsor, and firefighting in general.

“These were huge fires — huge buildings that today we would have to bring fire departments in from all over the Valley ,” said Smith. The Windsor Foundry chimney, left, and the Windsor Plaster Mill chimney, right, were all that remained of the two businesses following the Great Windsor Fire of 1897. - File

“That's when you started to see more asphalt type of shingles. That's when you started to see more tar paper on the sides of buildings. That's when you started to see distances between buildings being more carefully considered,” Smith. “From then on we started to build the fire department,” said Smith, noting that at one point, the Windsor Fire Department “was well-recognized as one of the best equipped fire departments in Atlantic Canada.”
