WENDY ELLIOTTWOLFVILLE, N.S. — Several of my neighbours are dedicated volunteers for ElderDog. From them I’ve learned that ElderDog was founded in Nova Scotia in 2009, which was news to me. ElderDog Canada most often aids seniors with dog care.
But Francesca and Don wanted to make sure that Sadie, who’d already been through a lot, should have the easiest possible transition to her new home. So, they flew with her to Nova Scotia where I got to meet them. Canadians reached out to pets to accompany them through the lockdown years of the pandemic. A neighbour adopted a dog that had been left unfed and outside so long it ate little rocks to have something in its belly. Just skin and bones.
In other countries, euthanasia is much more common. That’s why dog rescue organizations were bringing canines in from other nations. I know a pair of litter mates who came here from Texas recently. But in June, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency announced a ban due to a rabies concern involving importing dogs. Many hope the ban will be lifted soon.
