There is a separate room in the emergency department at these hospitals for these virtual visits. Nelson Venura, director of innovation with Nova Scotia Health, said these visits are a hybrid of in-person and virtual; a nurse or paramedic is with the patient in the room while the doctor does the assessment virtually.
Like the Virtual Care N.S. program for Nova Scotians on the Need a Family Practice Registry for access to primary care, the plan is to roll out the virtual emergency room initiative to other parts of the province in the future.On Aug. 31, Virtual Care N.S. opened up to everyone in the province on the registry, which Venura said is more than 125,000 people right now.
On average, Venura said they have 300 virtual care visits daily. Since the pilot of the program launched in May 2021, there have been a total of 34,000 virtual visits. "It is important to note that all care providers involved are still doing their in-person ," he said.
