Artist Karen Quigley, of Braeshore, began with an adventurous storyline and followed up with detailed watercolour illustrations to create her first children’s book, Dream Big … Even If You Are Small.Whether writing or painting, Karen Quigley finds her inspiration outside her seaside windows in Braeshore.
While the curious sea star gets top billing, Quigley has been pleasantly surprised to find many young children are attracted to a grumpy crab who makes frequent appearances in the book which was recently given a five star review by Literary Titan, a Canadian review service. Encouraging children to “dream big” is vital, according to Quigley, who dedicated the book to four young grandsons.
“Painting goes back to my childhood. We spent a lot of time with our grandparents on Prince Edward Island where my grandfather was a well-known painter. When he saw I was interested he took an interest in helping me. He was quite eccentric, I realize now, but he’d take me along when plein air painting and his only rule was that I not kick up any sand around his work.”
The studio, with various views of the ocean, is in a beachfront house she and her husband, supreme court justice Ted Scanlan, who grew up in Braeshore, were not in the market to buy. “I’ve been working on a series of paintings featuring dream horses. It has been in the works for a while but it could be a calendar some day.”
