Valerie Bert's car after being hit by a car on Union Highway in River Ryan on Dec. 9. The driver of the other car crossed the yellow line into opposing traffic and the grill of his car was left on Bert's vehicle. CONTRIBUTEDSYDNEY, N.S. — Valerie Bert thought her life was over when she was hit head-on by a vehicle on Union Highway heading to New Waterford.
People quickly gathered around Bert's car and emergency services were called. Bert could hear them yelling at her to get out of the car because it was on fire but she couldn't move.Someone at the scene was able to get a fire extinguisher and put the blaze out, keeping her safe until fire services arrived to extract her from her car through the roof using the jaws of life.Bert suffered multiple serious injuries from the crash.
However, Bert admits she is mad about the accident which she believes was caused by the other driver. Police told Bert's family the other driver had no insurance — information she wants to confirm when she finally gets to speak with investigating officers.Cape Breton Regional Police confirmed they responded to the accident and said the investigation is ongoing.
"Information provided at the scene indicates the two vehicles hit head-on travelling in opposite directions," Magnus said. Bert, who works in residential homes caring for people and children with specific needs, started work at her two jobs six weeks ago. This means she is ineligible for any short-term sick leave benefits through Canada's employment insurance plan.
