“It was in Windsor with Laurie that he taught me how to inspire players and lead a team. Coaching, really, is at the heart of the game of hockey. Coaches play an integral part in the experiences of our players, and we need to ensure they are supported and continue to teach and help our youth develop life skills while also teaching them the sport. At the youth level, our coaches are more teachers than coaches.
“This continues to be a focus for me and the entire HNS organization,” he said. “In 2019, the Diversity and Inclusion task force made it a goal to produce recommendations to the HNS Board of Directors to eliminate racism, discrimination and abuse in hockey as well as suggestions for making the sport more diverse and inclusive. This is work that needs constant focus and collaboration with underrepresented groups to ensure the game is accessible for all.
