Martinovsky, of Fredericton, won three of the events, including the open, blitz and rapid championships. Players competed in divisions based on Chess Federation of Canada ratings, and the top players' boards in the open championship were broadcast online. "I usually play with ," said Harrod, who started playing the game with his brother Andreas, who also competed in the festival along with their sister, Cecily. "I know my brother likes too, so I just kept playing it."
"They were possibly interested in seeing what kind of chess thing we could do because they were looking to get non-traditional sports going," said McKim. "From there, we came up with an idea, and this is our fourth year of playing on Thanksgiving weekend."
