“Before I became chief, I took it upon myself to leave the island as a young man to gain business experience in Boston,” said Paul, who spent several years working with the Boston Indian Council, an organization now known as the North American Indian Center of Boston. “Government dollars were few and far between and community members did what they could to keep food on the table,” recalled Paul, about the living conditions in Membertou some 40 years ago.
Other relatively recent ventures in Membertou include the Hampton Inn, connected to the convention centre by an overhead pedway, a new school and a new residential subdivision. “I also want to say that this has not been a one-person effort – this is a community initiative that has taken a lot of work from a lot of people,” he said.
