Cheyenne Isaac-Gloade, who grew up salmon fishing in Listuguj Miꞌgmaq First Nation in Quebec and has been part of treaty involvement in the area, will be showcasing how to filet a salmon while sharing the practice’s history . The plan is to make tree stumps from wood leftover from the hurricane for people to sit on. It is also an opportunity to showcase the woods, Woodchip Trail and powwow grounds, which are of sacred importance to the community and a traditional hunting area. Comforting, cooked food such as butternut squash will be shared.
“Our Mi'kmaw language is so sacred and it’s dwindling away because it's in competition with English and French and any other language and our children don't have the opportunity to take Mi’kmaw language in the urban schools,” said Paul-Martin. “I'm hoping this cultural event will be able to do that and captivate some of the youth or children or even elders that come across and want to know bits and pieces of information that would be valuable for their learning.”Renae Julien, senior heritage interpreter for the Millbrook Cultural & Heritage Centre applauds the showcase initiative. She has seen other communities do that kind of thing and thinks it is “so cool” to happen in Millbrook.
