ASK ALLISTER: What causes a rainbow near or around the moon? Contrails are, of course, man-made high cirrus clouds produced by aircraft. Like how clouds form naturally, water vapour within the exhaust emitted from the aircraft cools and condenses onto particles found within our atmosphere. Different influences at play in our atmosphere allow the cloud to be oriented in such a way and direction.
Since the clouds were trailing the aircraft and it was likely changing altitudes during that time, it caused the contrail to stand out more vertically amongst the others, or “hang” as Betty put it.That’s because the speed and direction of upper-level winds can tear contrail clouds apart, leading to more interesting formations.Before modern weather forecasting, sailors and farmers would look to patterns and the persistence of jet contrails to make judgement calls about the weather.
