Unionized workers at Port Hawkesbury Paper have signed a new collective bargaining agreement.PORT HAWKESBURY, N.S. — Unionized workers at Port Hawkesbury Paper have signed their first collective bargaining agreement in 10 years.
The new four-year agreement reached between the paper manufacturer and employees under Unifor Local 972 sees a “$3.50 wage adjustment to all rates for operations on Jan. 1, 2023, a $1.50 adjustment to all rates for operations on Jan. 1, 2024 and then 1.5 per cent wage increases at the beginning of both 2025 and 2026,” according to a news release the union issued on Dec. 21.
The union, which represents more than 200 workers at the Port Hawkesbury mill, said the new agreement achieved “long-overdue gains.” “The situation facing pulp and paper workers when they last negotiated was very different than it is now,” Unifor 972 president Archie MacLachlan said in a statement. “While the focus 10 years ago was on the very survival of the mill, negotiations this time had to focus on the well-being of the workers who are really to thank for its continued success.”
Along with general wage increases, the union said there were “improvements to the Sunday premium and time-and-a-half for working holidays in addition to holiday pay.”It has been our privilege to have the trust and support of our East Coast communities for the last 200 years.
