Community rallies behind Yarmouth County Cunningham family following leukemia diagnosis of child
YARMOUTH COUNTY, NS – Dressed in a favourite Spider-Man t-shirt, four-year-old Myles Cunningham sits on his mother Chelsea’s lap, watching rubber ducks float past in a brook as the sun shines down on a warm October day.In a perfect world, kids shouldn’t have cancer.This summer Myles was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
In addition to this, there have been three major recent ‘Smiles for Myles’ fundraisers held in East Pubnico, Yarmouth County.Most recently, a rubber duck race was held on Oct. 16, with the finish line at the Hipson’s Bridge in East Pubnico. Numbered ducks were sold for $10. In all, 500 ducks were sold. Cake, a BBQ and a pinata for the kids were part of the fun.
At the rubber duck race a treat bag given to Myles included, appropriately, a Spider-Man rubber duck.“He always wants to be with his brother,” says his mom, saying Myles can’t wait to get back home from hospital stays and appointments to see him.The Cunningham family came out for the rubber duck race fundraiser on Oct. 16. Pictured are Myles, his parents Cody and Chelsea and his brother Rylan.
“The first thing that comes to my mind is cancer, but I'm like, that's silly – who thinks they're going to draw that short straw? It's probably just something viral, something that's just sent his body out of whack.”More testing was done and then the family received the news no one wants to hear.Yarmouth County youngster Myles Cunningham has a lot of people supporting him as he battles cancer.
