Whitney Pier Memorial's 'A' team took gold at the first volleyball tournament of the year. | SaltWire | READ MORE

The Whitney Pier Memorial middle school 'A' volleyball team was number one at the kick-off tournament for the league, which took place on Oct. 14-15 in Sydney. And it was a special win for the team as they've dedicated their season to former teammate Molly Wadden who died due to cancer. They are playing this season as "Molly's Mustangs" in honour of the youth who raised thousands of dollars for children with cancer before her death.

"We've retired her number, No. 4, so no one can have that number again," said head coach Jolene Kosolofski.Community keeps cancer-fighting Paradise girl 'smiling the whole time' by rallying blood donors to her side Molly Wadden, top, with two of her best friends Mallory Floyd, bottom left, and Hope Dalton at a volleyball game when they first started in Grade 3. Three of Wadden's best friends and teammates, Mallory Floyd, Hope Dalton and Mikayla Slade, started playing volleyball together in Grade 3. They remember how Wadden was a bit of a star at Harbourside Elementary because she did the morning video announcements; walking down the hall with her, other students would ask for her autograph.
