The aftermath of the Quebec election poses a conundrum: some MNAs won't swear allegiance to the King, and so can't take their seats — but until the National Assembly meets, it can't debate changes to the oath. And who can change the rule? It isn't clear.

Following the Oct. 3 provincial election, the 11 returning Québec solidaire members of the national assembly swore an oath to the people of Quebec but not to the newly crowned King Charles III at a swearing-in ceremony on Wednesday. The oath to King Charles remains a condition for MNAs to take their seats. Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois, Québec solidaire’s parliamentary leader in the assembly, said afterward that he wants to work with all parties in the assembly to end that practice.Read up to 3 free articles per week.
