Under what circumstances are we going to oblige a Quebec elected official — in a state founded in secularism — to take an oath of loyalty to the king of a foreign country?” The second oath reads: “I do swear that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to his Majesty King Charles III.”
“The possibility of modifying or abolishing the oath has been raised before at the National Assembly,” Peters writes. “Up until today, however, the National Assembly has not accomplished any act in this direction and it is not up to me to make a decision on this matter.St-Pierre Plamondon interpreted the letter to say the law can eventually be changed. The most recent attempt was in 2019 when Québec solidaire presented a bill. It failed to get the support of the Liberals.
