ICYMI: “Overdose prevention sites have been studied extensively and do not negatively impact public safety,' said Shawn Martin, harm reduction co-ordinator with the province. “In fact, they have some public order benefits.'

The location, which was announced on Jan. 10, is the former site of the Upper Room Hospitality Food Bank. The Upper Room has moved into a facility across the street. In 2022, there were a record 30 accidental overdoses reported in the province, and that’s only taking into account the first nine months of the year. Numbers are still being tabulated for the fourth quarter of 2022.Facilities like this have been shown to have an impact on those numbers, said Martin.Having a site announced came as welcome news from two organizations.

Clay added that his two concerns are who the operator is going to be and what the harm reduction strategy will entail. Chris Clay, homeless outreach co-ordinator for the Native Council of P.E.I., said Belmont Street is a good choice for an overdose prevention site. - Colin MacLean/SaltWire Network file“It will be the same idea as if I went in for a flu shot. You have to stick around for 15 minutes afterwards," Martin said.
