Boates is the second owner of the 101-year-old car. - Kirk StarrattWOODVILLE, N.S. — A Woodville resident well known in the community for his mechanical ingenuity is keeping up to date with technology into his early 90s.in Woodville in 1960, when he said he stepped up from being an after work and weekend farmer to doing it full time.

He said he’s close to net-zero energy use, and he hopes to have enough photovoltaic capacity to also power his electric car, the first new car he ever bought.He has had steam-, gas-, diesel- and electric-powered cars. His first was a Ford Model T, which he bought with a neighbour when he was 14 years old and shared ownership.

She said Boates fixed the pop top on their Volkswagen camper after the retracting hinges were bent. Using tiny microprocessors, her husband helped Boates develop an Arduino program for his solar installation. Boates has used this to modify the direction of his photovoltaic installation to get the most output.

Charlotte recently made all the fish chowder for the annual Woodville Christmas Market and Luncheon, as she has done for many years.About 20 years ago, Keith Boates of Woodville and son Brian put their ingenuity to work, using mainly repurposed materials to build a cider press that is still being used today at the Boates family farm. KIRK STARRATTBoates said they started their cider operation with an old press that dated from the 1930s.
