The University of Victoria Vikes made a statement Friday night in Edmonton with a 92-71 Canada West men’s basketball victory over the University of Alberta Golden Bears.

UVic is the third-ranked team in the U Sports national top-10 poll and the Golden Bears are ranked No. 5 behind the top-ranked Carleton Ravens and second-ranked University of Ottawa Gee Gees. The Brock Badgers are No. 4.

Trent Monkman led UVic with 18 points while Ethan Boag added 14 points and rookies Izzy Helman and Renoldo Robinson 12 points each in a reprise of last year’s Canada West playoff final won by the Vikes. Meanwhile, Alberta defeated UVic 67-64 on Shae McCusker’s buzzer-beating three pointer in the earlier Canada West women’s game in Edmonton. Kate Johnson led the Vikes with 19 points while Ashlyn Day, who led Canada West with a 34.0 points-per-game scoring average going into the game, added 14 points.

NDP MP Taylor Bachrach (Skeena-Bulkley Valley, B.C.) asked if Canada needed “a concerted strategy around the zero emission vehicle and battery supply chains” given incentives offered in the act for the production of batteries for electric vehicles.
