New long-term care home slated to be built in Montreal’s West Island
The piece of land was set be demolished and replaced by a high-rise residential project that would have included more than 200 units.
But that proposal, from real estate developer Brivia group, was met with strong opposition from local citizens and in 2021, the city’s demolition committee turned down the project. “We’re a population that’s aging and I think we all have somebody that we think of that is in that situation who can definitely benefit from staying in the West Island and not having to be sent farther away and be closer to loved ones,” said Shannon Simpson, who lives nearby. “It’s definitely a win.”Though the reaction is mostly positive, there are questions regarding the project’s size, construction and impact on traffic.
