“Wally and I were good friends for a long time,” Rev. Frank Locke, 93, said. “We spent a lot of time together as kids. We attended the Brookfield Baptist Church at a young age, I remember Wally and I sitting in the very back seat together. Wally was a bit younger than I was, so we didn’t actually play hockey or ball for the Elks at the same time.”
“Yes, Wally was part of quite a few of those Elks winning teams,” Henderson said recently. “Wally was one of our better players, he was competitive, he liked to win. When you look back at the records, it’s impressive how many championship hockey teams Wally played for, he was definitely one of the key players.”
“Wally was the main driving force when we built an outdoor rink near the ballfield during the 1960s,” Matheson said. “I believe he was president of the Brookfield Athletic Association at the time.” On a personal note – as a kid, I watched Wally play many seasons for the Elks in the Truro District Hockey League. I also watched Wally play for Brookfield in the Truro & District Baseball League and later with the 1955 Elks when they switched to softball to play in the Debert Softball League. I finally got to play with Wally during the 1959-60 hockey season.
