Grenfell Campus residence building in Corner Brook. - SaltWire Network fileCORNER BROOK, N.L. — He’s a youthful offender with no criminal record, but the crime he committed is a serious one and a presentence report suggests a period of secured custody could be beneficial to him.
The teen, now 17, was convicted in September 2022 of assaulting his victim in a residence room at the university. His name is protected under the Young Offenders Act and there is a publication ban in place to prevent the identification of his victim, who was 19 at the time of the incident. During an earlier appearance, Ashton and the teen’s defence lawyer, Courtney Mills, suggested the court proceed with sentencing on the aggravated assault and assault with a weapon charges and enter a stay on the assault causing bodily harm charge.
In addition to the recommendation of secured custody, the presentence report noted the teen was at a high risk to re-offend and has anger issues. She said it’s important to remember this is a youth sentencing and a custodial sentence is a last resort and imposed when there are no other fit sentences.
