Corner Brook snowboarder Andi Osmond pulls off a trick as she hits the big air. CONTRIBUTEDWhen Newfoundland and Labrador’s first-ever snowboarding team gets together for the Canada Winter Games, Corner Brook will be well represented.
To make the Canada Winter Games at such a young age is a huge deal for her. She will be competing against youth much older, up to 18 years old. It is a testament to her fast development as a snowboarder.And there are plenty of benefits to gaining this experience. Interacting with older athletes from across the country for a week in the athlete’s village will provide opportunities to learn from others, trade tricks and ideas, and make friendships.
“I can remember times having them in my arms as babies and going down over little hills,” Jeremy explains. “We wee always in the winter built jumps, put together rails and courses in our backyard. It was kind of a natural progression really.” “In the past couple years, we’ve really seen a big spike in youth wanting to go in that direction,” he says. “Kind of a step outside of the basics of learning your turning and things like that but also getting into the tricks side and getting more focused on competitions.”
“A lot of them I’ve worked with and coached over the years, some of them I’ve coached since they were 10 and they’re up to 16 and to watch their progression and see this all happen is pretty exciting,” he says.Jeremy explains they saw a digital rendering of the Canada Games courses and the team has been excited ever since.
With record snowfall in Corner Brook through November, it looked like Andi and her Marble Mountain teammates would be able to take advantage of an early start training on the snow.But milder temperatures and rain through December resulted in snowmelt and less time than originally anticipated.
