The numbers suggest that so far, the NDP’s attempts to push dental care and other affordability measures aren’t translating into more votes for the party.

OTTAWA—For both Pierre Poilievre’s Conservatives and Justin Trudeau’s Liberals,For the NDP’s Jagmeet Singh, however, they could portend a sign of future problems: their share of the vote shrank in all four ridings, compared to the last general election.

McGrath said it’s “still a bit early” to see the pact — which was struck in 2021 and could see the party prop up the minority Liberals until 2025 — turning into success at the polls. The morning-after analysis from the Conservatives came at it a different way. What they saw was New Democrats bleeding support to the Liberals, which at a minimum means “there’ll be no election anytime soon,” said party strategist Anthony Koch in an interview. But that also includes the Conservatives. Their wins Tuesday weren’t entirely a cakewalk.

Other Conservatives, however, argued privately that the tactics the CPC used to win Portage-Lisgar are the reason the party didn’t do better in the other Manitoba byelection in Winnipeg South Centre. “The Leader of the Opposition is just continuing his attacks to try to distract from the underwhelming election results he got last night,” Trudeau said. The Liberals saw their share of the vote in Winnipeg South Centre jump by 10 percentage points, with the riding handily captured by Ben Carr, son of former Liberal cabinet minister Jim Carr, who died last year.
