Simeon said she and not artist Bell, to whom she is related, has been in charge of the memorial since the third day after it went up. She said there is no deadline for ending the memorial and said she met with city officials last week and thinks they can agree on a date that it would come down. But she said that first the federal government has to acknowledge the harm at at least half of Canada’s residential schools.
Asked if the city would be involved in the removal, she said the city understands closing the memorial may be “emotional and difficult” for many Indigenous people, especially school survivors. In the November letter addressed to Bell and signed by two managers, the city thanked her for creating the memorial but said it must now come down because “local Nations were not consulted and did not give formal permission” and that “cultural protocols would limit the duration of such memorials to one year or less.”Article content
Each of the letters, which were addressed to Bell, thanked her for setting up the memorial to bring attention to the issue of possible unmarked graves at residential schools.
