Review: With a shrunken heart and shrivelled soul, Richard III embodies Shakespeare's villainry yyc

In Bruce Horak, The Shakespeare Company and Hit & Myth Productions have found an actor capable of making this murderous sociopath not just entirely believable, but, at times, wholly charming and amusing.Sign up to receive daily headline news from the Calgary Herald, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.

Bruce Horak, Daniela Vlaskalic and Wendy Froberg in Richard III for The Shakespeare Company. Courtesy Tim NguyenIt is during these speeches that Horak has some of his finest moments, all smiles or sneers, laughing, joking, threatening and cajoling, but always self-congratulatory. He pronounces himself a villain and revels in his bloody deeds.

Horak uses his own vision loss to delve further into his character’s evil. Richard has a patch over one eye and uses a white cane. The irony is stunning because Richard is anything but blind. He sees so well the paths he must take to achieve his bloody goals. Richard uses his disability to trick others into thinking he is harmless.Article content

A full play of Richard III requires more than 30 actors and, except in community or university productions, the cost would be prohibitive. Porteous has whittled her cast down to 12 who all – except for Horak – play multiple roles. At times, and quite understandably, it can get confusing because the actors use only costume pieces to differentiate them.Photo by Tim Nguyen Co.
