“Red Cup is always a significant event in our school year. We want to celebrate our school and our hockey team, and help students make positive memories,” said Urguhart in a statement. At the time, it was suggested the Coxheath venue was not suitable to host the event due to safety concerns within the 46-year-old facility.Urguhart said there’s been a lot of planning leading up to the February event, which has included consultation with students and many members of the school community, as well as community partners such as the Cape Breton Regional Municipality, Cape Breton Regional Police Service and staff at the Cape Breton County Recreational Centre.
The tournament has always been played at the Cape Breton County Recreation Centre. Large crowds — including both the general public and school communities — have made the Red Cup experience memorable for hundreds of teams with students filling the stands behind the Riverview bench to cheer on the red and white.
