The Sydney River Volunteer Fire Department and Community Hall is one of nine community hubs getting provincial funds to serve as a comfort centre during emergencies. HandOutSYDNEY, N.S. — Nine community hubs in Cape Breton are getting provincial money to serve as comfort centres during emergencies.
The hubs are receiving money through the provincial community generator program to buy and install generators, allowing the facilities to serve as a gathering place for the community during emergencies like power outages. “There is much security in knowing that we’ve increased our capacity to come together in support during outages and extreme events,” said Cape Breton East MLA Brian Comer.
“Our community and our government learned from Fiona, and now we can weather future challenges with greater preparedness.” Organizations receiving money include the Catalone Seniors and Pensioners Association, the Coxheath Hills Wilderness Recreation Association, the Coxheath Volunteer Fire Department, the Grand Mira Community Society, the Howie Centre Volunteer Fire Department, the Main-a-Dieu Community Development Association, the Marion Bridge and Area Community Development Council, the Port Morien Volunteer Fire Department and the Sydney River Volunteer Fire Department and Community Hall.
