after access roads were blocked by activists who used commandeered heavy equipment to trench road surfaces and erect blockades., which they referred to as Coyote Camp in social media alerts soliciting funding and support.
“We held complete control over the territory from November 14 … until the RCMP raids started 4 days later on November 18,” reads one update by the group Gidimt’en Checkpoint, alongside a map detailing the precise location of their illegal blockades.Article content The blockaders, who call themselves “land defenders,” claim to be the legitimate representatives of the Wetʼsuwetʼen First Nation, and have denounced the Coastal GasLink pipeline as an act of “genocide.”
Their actions and presence have been repeatedly denounced by elected Wetʼsuwetʼen leadership, as well as much of the First Nations’ hereditary leadership. The Wetʼsuwetʼen First Nation has officially approved construction of the pipeline, has signed benefit contracts with its builders, and counts many of its members among Coastal GasLink workers.
Sporadic incidents have continued in the area since the Feb. 17 attack, along with open calls by activist groups for volunteers to help stop work at the site.after the Mounties questioned the occupants of a vehicle suspected to have been harassing traffic heading towards the Morice River site.hit a parking lot near the work camp filled with first responder vehicles.
