Nick Arbuckle was looking for something a bit different, something that might help him take another step forward as a quarterback in the Canadian Football League.

His solution: Join the top division of the National Capital Flag Football league, which has a couple of CFLers and many former elite college players on its Division A rosters.Sign up to receive daily headline news from Ottawa Citizen, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc. “It’s the role I had in Calgary for two years ,” said Arbuckle. “Nobody wants to be the backup, everybody wants to be the starter and leader of the team. But there’s a lot of value you can bring to the team in that role if you do it well. It’s not just in the game, it’s practice every day, being in the meeting rooms, watching film and being on the sideline during the games. There’s so much you can do as a backup to help the team win, things people on the outside can’t see.

“Ottawa was the place I wanted to be,” he said. “We really love the community. I wanted to stay with this organization, I believe in Coach Dyce and I’ve had a chance to talk with Khari , who I’ve heard nothing but great things about. Being in the quarterback room with Masoli is going to be great. I think the Redblacks have an opportunity to do something really special. I know we can. We have the ability to turn this thing around and build something RNation can really be proud of.
