A political rookie and former talk-radio host is the new mayor of Ottawa, one of several major Ontario cities where incumbents did not seek re-election.
“Tonight, the people of Ottawa made a clear decision: you voted for positive change. You voted for compassion and fiscal responsibilities, you voted for a safer, more reliable, more formidable city, you voted for an approach that works for all of Ottawa,” he said, praising McKenney for being a “trailblazer” in politics.
“I have no intention of using those powers … I don’t think anybody in Ottawa was asking for them. I intend to build consensus and respect the democratically elected members of council,” he said earlier this month. At 10:25 p.m., with 154 of 246 polls reporting, Horwath had 41.33 per cent of the vote to 40.94 per cent for Loomis, a difference of 434 votes.
