Three current Liberal MPs and one former Liberal MP considering run for Ontario Liberal leadership via thehilltimes

Liberal MPs Yasir Naqvi, left, Michael Coteau, and Nathaniel Erskine-Smith are each considering a run for the leadership of Ontario Liberal Party. The provincial party will finalize the rules and timeline of the leadership election in March.Share a storyAt least three Liberal MPs and one former Liberal MP who is now an MPP in the Ontario legislature are testing the waters of the Ontario Liberal Party leadership race.

The last two Ontario elections—2018 and 2022— have been the worst in the provincial party’s history. Their principal opponents, Doug Ford and the Progressive Conservatives, won two back-to-back thumping majorities. Both elections also yielded the poorest electoral performances in the Ontario Liberal Party’s history.

“I’m just waiting to see what the timeline looks like, the rules, and to really see what the participation level looks like among contestants as well,” said Coteau. Former NDP MP Glenn Thibeault pictured with former NDP MP Megan Leslie. Thibeault, who joined the Ontario Liberals in 2014, is now exploring the possibility of seeking the provincial party’s top job.“Whoever steps up and takes on this responsibility has to commit to rebuilding a party, in many ways from scratch,” said Coteau. “Rebuilding the finances, and the most important thing is rebuilding the trust between the Ontario Liberal Party and the people of Ontario.

The Liberals have been representing the federal riding of Kingston and the Islands since 1988. Before that, former PC cabinet minister Flora MacDonald represented the riding between 1972 and 1988. Provincially, this has been a swing riding represented by the Liberal, NDP, and PC MPPs.The Hill Times
