Mike Wilner: Vladimir Guerrero Jr. deserves his Gold Glove nomination this year — but here’s why he probably won’t win
We saw it most of the season — the splits to haul in a wide throw, the great picks of balls in the dirt, the back-to-the-plate running catches of pop-ups in shallow right — Vladimir Guerrero Jr. looked great on defence a whole lot of the time in 2022 and he’s been rewarded by being one of five Blue Jays named as a finalist for the Rawlings Gold Glove Award along with third baseman Matt Chapman, pitcher José Berrios, right-fielder Jackie Bradley Jr. and utility-man Whit Merrifield.
Guerrero didn’t finish in the league lead, though, winding up tied for second with three Defensive Runs Saved, one behind Minnesota’s Luis Arraez, the A.L. batting champion who is also a Gold Glove finalist at first base, along with the Yankees’ Anthony Rizzo, who had a DRS of minus-3, fourth-worst among American League first baseman who played at least 500 innings.
Voting is still done by managers and up to six members of their coaching staff, but they choose from a pool of qualified players. They can’t vote for players on their own teams and their votes only make up 75 per cent of the overall tally. The other quarter comes from the SABR Defensive Index. Guerrero falls even farther short when looking at Ultimate Zone Rating per 150 defensive games, which also attempts to quantify how many runs a player saves with the glove. He was third-last in the AL at minus-four. Arraez blew away the competition — the former middle infielder’s 6.6 UZR/150 was more than twice the 3.2 posted by his closest competitor, Minnesota teammate Jose Miranda, though Miranda’s DRS was minus-six.
