CBU political science professor Tom Urbaniak. Those stark expressions were used by Rowan Williams, the former Archbishop of Canterbury. He wanted to describe a worrying trend. He was trying to remind us – all of us –- that healthy democracies and caring communities need physical landmarks, visual cues and friendly, beautiful, local gathering places.

I was thinking about “flattened space” and “flattened time” – this growing blandness and tiredness – as I observed the hundreds of majestic, awesome century trees felled by post-tropical storm Fiona and as I reflected on the massive erosion of coastlines caused by the same natural disaster. Basically, it would work like this: Local groups, schools and others would keep recommending local places, people and events that they would like to commemorate – from the recent and more distant past. A small plaque would be approved. It would be affixed near the appropriate location. Each plaque would have one sentence, two at the most.

Many of the plaques could be sponsored, with a small acknowledgment of the sponsor on the bottom of the plaque. Under $250 should be enough to get a long-lasting, elegant, professionally designed, uniquely shaped outdoor metal plaque.
