Chantal Hébert: Pierre Poilievre can’t look the other way forever

MONTREAL—For now, Canada’s premiers are Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s problem. And as the breakdown in negotiations on the financing of the health-care system demonstrated this week, federal-provincial co-operation is in very short supply these days.

Poilievre’s stance on the language rights of New Brunswick’s Acadian minority and on their constitutional protection could become a litmus test of his commitment to Canada’s linguistic duality. Over the course of his leadership campaign and in the two months since his leadership victory, Poilievre has cast himself as a champion of the working class, pushing the narrative that the Liberals are first and foremost looking out for the so-called elites.

Just recently for instance, he again railed against safe injection sites. A decade ago, the Supreme Court ruled that a federal refusal to exempt such sites from the application of criminal drugs laws would breach the Charter. Would a CPC government follow in the footsteps of the current Quebec and Ontario governments and use the notwithstanding clause to impose its view?
