What if Twitter dies? What if Twitter’s demise really is coming — and soon? For myself and my colleagues, the working-stiff journos in Canada, we’d feel the loss painfully and acutely. Opinion by mattgurney

It may not. Hell, it probably won’t. But given the obvious chaos behind the scenes there, what if the Musk purchase is a fatal fiasco? What if the whole thing just collapses or goes into bankruptcy? The majority of Canadians wouldn’t notice, realize or care. Only about 40 per cent of adult Canadians use Twitter, and fewer than half of those use it daily. So the entire site could vanish into a black hole tomorrow and for most people, life would just keep on keepin’ on, at least for a while.

That’s the paradox of Twitter for journalists. It is where we can be the target of terrible abuse, even criminal harassment. Some of what people have been subjected to here over the years has been truly revolting, enough to drive some people off the site. But more stayed.

It was also, during the pandemic, a vital tool for gathering information, and experts, together. It was an incredibly efficient way for journalists who had no prior grounding in medicine, public health and emergency management to find experts who could begin the process of their education. to keep my little blue check mark? No. But is some of what Twitter does valuable, in a literal sense, to me and my work? Absolutely. If it became necessary to pay to continue to receive that value, and if I had any confidence that I’d get enough back for my money, I’d absolutely be open to it. I already pay for subscriptions and services that make my job easier . Twitter could be the next.
