\u0022They put on a pretty compelling show,\u0022 said RCMP spokesperson Const. Mansoor Sahak
On Monday, North Vancouver RCMP spokesperson Const. Mansoor Sahak said there had been several incidents in Metro Vancouver over the past month where a group of people had ripped off a passerby by running a fake gold scam.Start your day with a roundup of B.C.-focused news and opinion delivered straight to your inbox at 7 a.m., Monday to Friday.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.
Sahak said one of the group will approach a person on the street with a story that they are travellers from the Middle East and having problems with the Canadian banking system. “They wear layers of gold-coloured necklaces, rings on just about every finger, big gaudy earrings, and even the children are decked out in sparkling finery. The men are usually wearing business attire, and the women are dressed in clothing reminiscent of middle eastern cultures,” Sahak said.
The scammer then offers some of the jewelry for cash, with the jewelry not being gold and in most cases being totally worthless. “Our concern is both for those who stand to lose money, and for the fact the scammers are involving children in these offences,” Sahak said. Our in-depth journalism is possible thanks to the support of our subscribers.
