She was a CNN foreign correspondent for two decades, reporting on terrorist networks in Southeast Asia and running the network’s Manila and Jakarta bureaus. In 2012 she started the online news website Rappler, growing it from a team of 12 journalists to more than 100. Once a true believer of sites like Facebook, which she believed would help to build humanitarian institutions from the bottom up, Ressa said her opinion changed around 2016 when the technology’s ability to spread misinformation became clearer. “I have to say the Nobel Prize reminded me that doing the right thing is the right thing,” she said, to loud applause.
