Halifax North Memorial Public Library, seen in Halifax February 10, 2023. - noHALIFAX, N.S. — Halifax libraries need more funding to buy materials just so they’re not falling too far behind, says the chief librarian.
According to a report, Halifax residents use their public libraries far more than residents of other comparable cities in the country. Costs for books, like everything else, has gone up, putting a squeeze on how many new titles the libraries can add to their collection. Staff estimate books are five to eight per cent more expensive and the cost of electronic materials cost up to three times as much as their physical counterparts.
“Demand for the library collection remains consistent; however, the library is not able to meet the community’s demand,” library staff wrote.A $300,000 boost would definitely help bridge the gap in the collection, but the library’s ability to meet demands from the public would still continue to decline, according to the report.
