Police say a man is in custody after a suspected hate-motivated incident in which he allegedly drove a vehicle directly toward a worshipper at a Toronto mosque, yelled threats, and uttered racial slurs.
Karunakaran has been charged with one count of uttering threats, one count of assault with a weapon, and one count of dangerous driving. The charges have not been proven in court. During Ramadan, mosques are places of community and peace - and everyone should feel safe in their place of worship. This violence and Islamophobia has no place in our communities or in Canada. Federal Minister of Housing and Diversity and Inclusion Ahmed Hussen also issued a statement on the attack.
I am deeply saddened by the hate motivated attack that took place out side of the Islamic Society of Markham on April 6th, during the holy month of Ramadan.
