So, my car is only in use four per cent of the time. According to a recent Angus Reid survey, of the 8,760 hours in a year, the average Canadian spends just 380 driving their car. That’s seven hours a week, and a fifth drive less than two hours weekly, and two-thirds aren’t even daily drivers. The high-miler commuters among you are probably laughing at these numbers, but averages are just that.

In theory, it’s a wonderful use of resources. The study points out how expensive it is to own a car in Canada; on average, most of us pay around $7,500 between purchase, insurance and upkeep. That number changes depending on your insurance, for instance. If you have a lump of metal just sitting in your driveway exhausting your wallet, why not let it earn its keep? Turo says in Canada, they have 20,000 registered vehicles, and 600,000 patrons signed up to use their service.
