Twenty-nine times more likely to cause a crash, or have a near-miss in a construction zone. Twenty-nine times more likely to kill or injure a construction worker because you scan a text or take a call. Sobering numbers.
Construction zones are already considered, by law, vulnerable zones for workers. Along with school zones, playgrounds, daycares and hospitals, speeds are lowered and fines are increased. None of that is new, but what is new, is the many ways drivers are now actively seeking out ways to be distracted and take their eyes from the road. The Missouri study went beyond the standard information available in police reports.
Our roads are incredibly dangerous for those who must perform work outside of their cars. Ontario’s Move Over law came into effect in 2004; when you see emergency vehicles, including tow trucks, on the side of the road with lights flashing, you must slow down to less than the speed limit and proceed with caution. If the roadway has two lanes or more, you must move over and leave a lane clear next to the emergency crews. All provinces and American states have a version of this law on the books.
Take the people who refuse to slow down for construction zones or emergency workers, and add in those texting or mucking with infotainment systems while they drive. Anyone standing near a live lane of traffic is already in an incredibly unsafe situation, even with cones, barriers and signage. Those who have to do it for a living deserve you paying attention and slowing down.
