It\u0027s time for the Ford government to act on the priorities they promised voters they\u0027d push during the election.
They will gather to congratulate themselves and revel in the glory of an impressive election victory. As recently as August though, Ford and his health minister, Sylvia Jones, were promising reforms to the health system. They said the status quo wasn’t working and they would turn to the private sector to help do away with the surgical backlog.Article content Still, Ford’s promise to clear away surgical backlogs is being bogged down by yet more stalling tactics by the bureaucrats at the Ministry of Health. Licences to perform basic cataract surgeries that were supposed to be issued more than a year ago are held up once again as clinics are now required to answer more questions, jump through more hoops.
In too many cases, Ford’s stated policy goals are being held back for the simple reason that he failed to put people in place who agree with, or at least don’t oppose, his agenda. We aren’t quite like the Americans in that when governments change, much of the leadership of the bureaucracy changes as well.At its best the professional public service simply adapts to the government that the public has elected and implements their agenda without fear or favour.
