Opinion: : We need to share the road

Taxing the equity of our homes is ‘un-Canadian’One fundamental difference between my proposal and what Davidoff and Kershaw advocate is that I believe it is fair for those who received a tax benefit in purchasing their homes to pay some form of capital-gains tax upon disposal of the homes. It is not unlike those who borrowed from their RRSP to purchase a home and must pay it back or face taxation.

In the face of an unaffordability crisis made worse by high interest rates, this can be viewed as a stop-gap measure that government can utilize to help first-time homebuyers. It is a far cry from the kind of taxation proposed by Davidoff and Kershaw. In my previous writings to The Vancouver Sun, I have characterized that saving for a home is part of the Canadian retirement plan, which is as Canadian as maple syrup. Taxing the equity of our homes is simply un-Canadian.

Yet another column on the importance of getting seven to eight hours of sleep each night, which causes me nothing but stress that I’m going to die soon. Has anyone taken into consideration that our “sleep” genes passed on from our parents/grandparents should be seriously looked at too? My mother, who recently celebrated her 100th birthday, has the worst sleep habits of anyone I know, and she’s still going strong.

I am overjoyed to get six hours of sleep each night, and these are broken hours, just like my mother’s. I’ve got the energy during every day that I challenge anyone my age, or younger, to match. I actually had eight hours of unbroken sleep a few months ago and entered it into my calendar as it was a “one-off”. Did I feel better-rested the following morning? No. In fact, I felt drowsier. I wake up each morning, raring to go.

Going forward, I will avoid all articles touting the importance of seven to eight hours of sleep each night and accept that maybe “one shoe doesn’t fit all”.
