Not every NFL player grows up dreaming about reaching the pinnacle of American football.

“I was still just a kid then, coming out of college. I didn’t even know much of what the CFL was about then,” Kalinic said this week in a phone interview from Indianapolis, Ind. “In Buffalo, I was star-struck, to say the least, by the magnitude of it all. But that’s when I got the itch to come back. I was like, ‘THIS is where I want to be.’”

After graduating as a multi-sport star from Silverthorn Collegiate, Kalinic played four years of football with the York University Lions. In his last year, 2018, he was named a two-time Ontario University Athletics all-star — both offensively, primarily as a fullback, and on special teams. On Jan. 26, Kalinic signed a reserve/future contract with Indy. By the end of spring practices and mini-camps he felt he’d gotten over the CFL-to-NFL humps.

By this Sunday, Kalinic hopes to be elevated to Indy’s game-day roster for the third straight week, for Monday night’s home game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. It can get pretty rough on special teams in the NFL, what with so many high-speed collisions. That doesn’t scare Kalinic, at all.
