Sheldon Keefe is using up his ammunition.
“Our elite players couldn’t play like elite players, couldn’t make a difference,” Keefe said after the Leafs’ second loss in four games to begin 2022-23. “That’s the way it goes when those guys don’t make the difference that they can.”Article content
Murray is on the shelf for several weeks after coming up with an adductor injury in the morning skate on Saturday, leaving the goaltending duties to Ilya Samsonov — who also is trying to turn his NHL career in the proper direction — and the still unproven Erik Kallgren. Keefe indicated he will make lineup changes for the game, which amounts to a no-brainer after the loss to Arizona. Nick Robertson, who would have been with the Leafs from the outset had there not been salary-cap issues, should get into his first game, probably in place of Denis Malgin. Victor Mete appears to be a safe bet to be inserted on the blue line after Jake Muzzin suffered a neck injury against Arizona.
Two of William Nylander’s three goals have come on the man advantage. And while captain John Tavares has been effective, the second line as a whole can bring more. Perhaps Robertson will help make that happen. Putting him in the bottom six would make little sense.
