The prime minister defended his record and directed barbs at his chief political opponent during Liberal party’s three-day national convention in Ottawa.
OTTAWA—In a speech laden with barbs for his chief political opponent, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau used his sole appearance at the Liberal party’s national convention Thursday to defend his record in government and paint Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre as an irresponsible purveyor of populist anger.a litany of accusations and attacks on Poilievre
At the same time, the prime minister accused Poilievre of “parroting” gun lobbyists. He condemned him for allowing Conservative MPs to meet with a German far-right politician. And he decried Poilievre’s show of support for protesters who took part in the so-called Freedom Convoy occupation that “blockaded our streets and borders for weeks” last year.
“Many Conservative Canadians feel abandoned by what the Conservative Party has become,” he went on. “They haven’t left their party; their party left them. But our approach is to always be there for all Canadians.” He then tried to contrast this record with Poilievre, whom Trudeau accused of a “brokenist” ideology for policies that include his pledge to scrap the CBC and his opposition to the government’s emerging dental care program.
Standing in the crowd was Fred DeLorey, a long-time Conservative strategist who ran the federal party’s campaign machine for the 2021 election. DeLorey said he was not impressed by the atmosphere of the convention, which he described as “dull” and “very quiet.”
