Susan Delacourt: Pierre Poilievre will be bigger than the featured guests at the Liberal convention
The best possible motivational speaker for the federal Liberals is not on the lineup for this weekend’s big party convention in Ottawa.
Here’s the slightly good news: the latest numbers from Abacus Data, to be released as the convention gets under way on Thursday, show that the Liberals remain competitive — even capable of forming a majority government, according to the polling analysis. “What’s keeping the Liberals competitive are the Conservatives and Pierre Poilievre. They have not established themselves as acceptable alternatives to enough voters yet,” Coletto says.
This echoes what I’ve been hearing from seasoned Liberal veterans. One long-time Liberal told me recently that Trudeau and his team seem clear-eyed about the level of antagonism to the prime minister, especially among male voters. What worries this Liberal vet is that the party is underestimating the lack of enthusiasm among the electorate — call it the “meh” factor.
That’s why the number-one question at this weekend’s convention will revolve around energy — not the electrical and battery future for Canada the government keeps announcing this year, but the energy left in the Liberal tanks.
