Donald said his father, George Percival Cooper, served with the 40th battalion, Canadian Infantry, in Europe during the First World War. He understood the importance of fighting for freedom. Donald Cooper was a young boy when the Second World War broke out, but he knew he wanted to sign up as soon as he could. He’s pictured here in 1944. - Contributed

This encoded form of telecommunication, named after Samuel Morse, was widely used in the Second World War, and continued to be used regularly until 1999. Now it’s used more by amateur radio enthusiasts.Donald knew Morse code, and as radio operations progressed, he learned teletype and then more modern forms of communication, his son said.
