Unlike their northern European counterparts, Italians generally drink in moderation and are incensed by what they see as state interference in what should be a matter of personal responsibility. Lamberto Frescobaldi, the president of the Italian Wines Union, said: “In some of those countries it is not unusual to say ‘right, tonight I’m going to get drunk.’ If you do that in Italy it is something to be ashamed of – you’re seen as a damned idiot. There’s a cultural difference.”
Antoniio Tajani, the foreign minister, called the Irish initiative “absurd,” adding that the decision “ignores the difference between moderate consumption and abuse of alcohol.” Ireland has three years to introduce labels warning consumers that alcohol can lead to various cancers and liver disease. Italy is to appeal to the European Commission against the labels.
